Vortex win at Cincinnati (February 11, 2012)
Ohio Vortex win at Cincinnati for the first time in club history. For the second night on the road, the Vortex came out strong and determined to win against the Kings for the second time this season. Cincinnati was in the hunt for a playoff spot and needed a win, but the Vortex were not going to give in. Goalie Mike Mason and the defense were strong all night, only allowing five goals against a team known for scoring. Steve Gillespie led the team with three goals, which was his second recorded hat trick of the season. Mike Balogun also added another two. Stefan Ostergren added a goal and an assist. Also scoring were Juddy McKinney, Nate Yates and Ross Ashley. Bryan Henson contributed with two assists and Matt Dagilis had an assist. The Vortex started out the game strong by scoring the first goal, with that quarter ending in a 2-2 tie. fter that Cincinnati would never catch up. Halftime ended at 4 to 2 in favor of the Vortex. Ohio went on to win the game 9 to 5.
Ohio Vortex travel to Louisville (February 10, 2012)
The Vortex traveled down to Louisville for the second time this season. Ohio Vortex ended the game down 8-5, which gave Louisville their fifth straight win. Mike Balogun led the Vortex with a goal and an assist. Ryan McClay, Matt Dagilis, Ross Ashley and Jared Dombrowski each contributed with a goal. Steve Gillespie added an assist. Vorte kept up the pressure through the game scoring tow of their goals in the fourth quarter. Mike Mason logged 21 saves on the evening.
Ohio Vortex at Detroit (February 4, 2012)
Vortex traveled into Michigan to take on the Waza this past Saturday. Vortex got onto the scoreboard first with a goal from Steve Gillespie, assisted by Mike Balogun. Ross Ashley then assisted to Ben Truax to end the first quarter with a score of 2-2. Ohio held strong into the third quarter were they were down 5-4 until Detroit pulled away by ending the game with a score of 11-6. Ben Truax had his first professional hat trick, with Matt Dagilis and Ryan McClay also contributing goals. Assists for the team came from Stefan Ostergren, Chad Flath, Jordan Zapotechne and Matt Dagilis. Goalie Richard Ott tallied 10 saves.
Ohio wins in Kansas (January 28, 2012)
On the road for the second straight night in a row, Ohio traveled west across Missouri to take on the Kansas Magic. The game starts off slowly with Ohio down 3-1 at halftime. Vortex's offense came out strong and hard during the second half scoring eight goals to beat Kansas with a 9-6 victory. Richard Ott provided a great game in goal with 16 saves. Steve Gillespie led the offense with a hat trick and an assist, while Ryan McClay chipped in with two goals an an assist. Player coach Denzil Antonio, along with Matt Dagilis, Lewis Black and Aleks Kico finished the scoring with one goal each. Mike Balogun tallied two assists. Mikaiil Ahmed and Billy Berger also contributed with one assist each.
Vortex travel to Illinois (January 27, 2012)
Ohio falls 12-3 on the road against the Illinois Piasa. Nate Yates led the team scoring two goals, while Matt Dagilis scored the additional point for the Vortex. Steve Gillespie and Mike Balogun each contributed with an assist.
Vortex wish their goalie Mike Mason a speedy recovery. The players all had to travel icy roads in the morning snowstorm to reach the departure point in Canton. While traveling, Mike was in an accident that sent him to the hospital. We wish him the best in a recovery and hope to see him back on the field soon.
Louisville Lightning Comes to Canton (January 21, 2012)
The Lightning got out to a big lead within the first quarter but as the game went on the Vortex slowly chipped at their lead. Into fourth quarter, with only three minutes left, the game was tied at 7-7. The Vortex played hard and kept the pressure on to give Louisville a good fight but they slipped away with a 9-7 victory. Goalie Mike Mason tallied 24 saves to keep the Vortex in the game. Andy Lorei scored two gaols and one assist while Juddy McKinney tallied one goal and one assist. Ronnie, Stolz, Steve Gillespie, Ross Ashley and Jordan Zapotechne each added a goal. Stefan Ostergren added two assists.
Ohio Vortex hosts Detroit Waza (January 20, 2012)
Despite another icy snow storm, Vortex and Detroit took the field for what turns out to be an incredibly exciting game at the Civic Center. At half time, Detroit went up 7-4 but the Vortex came out strong after the intermission. Vortex outscore Detroit two to one in the third quarter, bringing the score to 8-6. By the fourth quarter, Ohio's offense was on fire scoring six goals with the game tied at one minute to go. With less than five seconds to go on the clock, Detroit scores from about three quarters of the field to end the game. The final score ended with Detroit 13 and Ohio 12. Ohio's Andy Lorei tallied four goals with two goals each for Stefan Ostergren, Ross Ashley and Jordan Zapotechne. Steve Gillespie and Mike Balogun both added a goal. Gillespie also tallied two assists and Ben Truax with one assist. Ohio Vortex may have come out one goal shy, but it made for an extremely exciting and competitive game for the fans.
Ohio Vortex travel to Louisville, KY to take on the Lightning (January 13, 2012)
Ohio falls short in Louisville and loses to the Lightning 15-4 on the road. Vortex's Ben Traux is assisted by Steve Gillespie for the only goal of the first half. Gillespie comes back to assist Jared Dombrowski during the third quarter. Ryan McClay assists Stefan Ostergren and Matt Dagilis lands one in the goal to end the game.
Vortex battled Illinois in back to back weekend games (December 17, 2011)
The Ohio Vortex dropped a pair of back to back home games against visiting Illinois Piasa on Friday and Saturday nights in Canton, Ohio.
Friday's game opened up with a goal by Gillespie which took the Vortex into the second quarter with a 1-0 lead over the visiting Piasa. Mehozonek went down with a gash to his forehead after being boarded in the first half forcing the Vortex to play sixth attacker. Mehozonek would later return to play the rest of the game after getting treatment from the medical staff. After dropping several goals, newly signed Stefan Ostergren added another goal for the Vortex to end the third quarter with Vortex 2, Piasa 4. Jordan Zapotechne added a third goal for the Vortex in the fourth quarter but the Vortex would go on to drop the game by a total of 8 to 3.
Despite the grueling ice storm in Northeast Ohio, Piasa and Vortex squared off in their second game of the weekend. The Vortex ended a sluggish first half down 4-1 with a goal by #33, Andy Lorei. Goals in the second half came by #21 Steve Gillespie, #7 Chris Green and two by #5 Stefan Ostergren. The Piasa finished the game at 9-5.
Vortex drop game on the road vs Cincinnati Kings (December 3, 2011)
The Vortex took an early 2-0 lead on two quick goals by Jared Dombrowski. Cincinnati answered with one more and the Vortex took their 2-1 lead into the 2nd quarter. The Kings then continued with four more, taking the lead of 5-2 going into halftime. Cincinnati scored the only goal of the 3rd quarter. The Vortex Andy Lorei, number 33, scored in the fourth to cut the Kings lead to 6-3. With minutes remaining, the Vortex went with a sixth attacker and the Kings scored 3 goals within the last several minutes for the final 9-3 margin.
Steve Gillespie named PASL Player of the Week - Week 3 (Tuesday Nov 22, 2011)
Gillespie tallied two goals and four assists to help the Vortex beat Cincinnati, 8-6. Gillespie is in his third year with the Vortex and currently leads the team with nine points in three games.
Gillespie's six points in the game against Cincinnati are the league's greatest amount per game this season. Gillespie is currently seventh in the PASL in scoring.
Ohio Vortex win first game of season at home (Saturday Nov 19, 2011)
The Ohio Vortex beat the Cincinnati Kings Saturday night with a score of 8 to 6 to improve to 1-2 on the year. Ross Cochran and Steve Gillespie led the way for the Vortex with two goals each. Petrov, McKinney, Dombrowski and McClay all added goals as well. Gillespie led the team with 4 assists, and fthe following all contributed with 1 assist: Lorei, McClay, Yates and Petrov.
The Vortex converted 4 of their 8 goals on powerplay man-up situations in front of a great crowd Saturday night. Goalkeeper, Billy Mehozonek, played a key role in the victory, coming up with many crucial saves throughout the game.
Vortex will next travel to Cincinnati on December 3rd. They will kickoff at 7:35pm from the Cincinnati Gardens.

Ohio Vortex Night! at Eddy and Iggy's in Lakewood, Ohio (Tuesday Nov. 15, 2011)
Vortex fans had the opportunity to meet the professional team in Lakewood, Ohio this past Tuesday. The team had a great turnout.Fans had the opportunity to eat dinner, get autographs and have their pictures taken with their favorite players. There were several raffles involved, which included an autographed game ball, autographed Nike shoes and a 50/50 raffle.
Eddy and Iggy's is located at 17900 Detroit Ave. in Lakewood, Ohio. We thank them for their fan friendly atmosphere and support.
Vortex traveled to Taylor Sportsplex to take on the Detroit Waza (Saturday Nov. 12, 2011)
The Vortex traveled to Detroit Saturday night on their first away trip of the season. After a hard fought game, the Vortex lost 9 - 7 falling to 0-2 this season.
Despite the loss, the Vortex had plenty of positives to take away from the game, including a two goal performance each by Georgi Petrov and Jared Dombrowski. The other Vortex goals came from Judson McKinney, Ryan McClay and Andy Lorei who scored on a 4th quarter penalty kick. Gillespie lead with two assists, as well as assists by Yates, Angelokostopoulos and Dombrowski.
The Vortex will return to Canton this Saturday, November 19th as they host Cincinnati.
Ohio Vortex fall 11-3 to Detroit Waza in opener (Saturday Nov. 5, 2011)
Ohio Vortex fell 11-3 to Detroit Waza at the home opener on Saturday, November 5, 2011 in front of a crowd of 418.
Veteran's Pete Angelokostopoulos, Steve Gillespie and Andy Lorei stepped up to score for the Vortex. Also returning to the field was Tyler Johnston, Ryan McClay, Georgi Petrov, Jared Dombrowski, Ronnie Stolz and Ross Cochran. New this season were Goalies Billy Mehozonek & Richard Ott, along with brothers Jordan & Jonn Zapotechne and University of Akron alumni Enrique Paez.
